Credit Utilization Explained: Managing a Low Concora Credit Limit

With a starter limit of a few hundred dollars, even modest spending can make your credit utilization look high. Understanding how utilization works lets you keep your score climbing.

What credit utilization is

Credit utilization is the share of your available revolving credit you're using. It's a key part of the "amounts owed" category, about 30% of your FICO® Score.

How it's calculated

Utilization = total card balances ÷ total card limits × 100. A $90 balance on a $300 Concora Credit card = 30% utilization.

Scoring models look at both overall utilization and per-card utilization. With only one card, they're the same number.

What's a good utilization ratio?

The payment timing trick

Card balances are usually reported on your statement closing date. If you pay most of your balance a few days before that date, the reported balance — and your utilization — stays low, even if you used the card during the month.

Expert tip — Priya Nathan, Credit Education Lead

Utilization has no memory in most scoring models — it's a snapshot. That means one high month can be fixed next month. Late payments, by contrast, stay for years. Prioritize on-time payments first, utilization second.

Raising your limit

A higher limit with the same spending lowers utilization. After six or more months of on-time payments, read our page on requesting a Concora Credit limit increase.

FAQ

Does 0% utilization help?

Very low utilization is ideal, but reporting a small balance (1–9%) can score slightly better than 0% in some models.

Does paying in full lower utilization?

Only if the payment posts before the statement closing date. Otherwise the statement balance is reported first.
