Expert tip — Marcus Hale, Compliance & Fact-Check Reviewer

Send billing-error letters by certified mail with return receipt. The 60-day clock and your FCBA rights depend on a written notice, and proof of delivery ends any argument about timing.

What happens next

The issuer must acknowledge your dispute within 30 days and resolve it within two billing cycles (no more than 90 days). While it's under investigation, you don't have to pay the disputed amount, and it can't be reported as delinquent.
